Two-time Second Team All-Pro Maxx Crosby has been traded by the Las Vegas Raiders to the Baltimore Ravens. The star edge rusher, a player that has been a cornerstone in Las Vegas’ defense for seven seasons, is finding a new home with Baltimore. Crosby has been a focus for many teams this free agency: his hefty contract combined with the fact he played for one of the least successful franchises in the 2025 NFL Season makes him a prime candidate for teams to target. Las Vegas was not willing to give their talented edge rusher away for little to nothing, driving most teams away due to the steep price tag of Maxx Crosby. However, one franchise, one that is itching for success with their two-time MVP quarterback, was willing to send the house to pick up an elite edge rusher, albeit one close to the end of his prime.

The Baltimore Ravens have traded the 14th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and a first round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft for Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby. The deal is highly expensive, extremely desperate, and screams of aspirations to win a championship. Baltimore, even with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson and critical role players, have found little success in the past six years; the closest they’ve ever been to a Super Bowl was in the 2023 NFL Season, suffering a 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. In subsequent and previous seasons, they have always been mainstays in the NFL playoffs but could never put together a meaningful run. However, the 2026 NFL Season is shaping up to be a perfect storm for the Baltimore Ravens after a monstrous trade for Maxx Crosby, strengthening their weakest link on defense and adding some veteran guidance. However, the implications for Baltimore failing to piece it together in the 2026 season are grand; running back Derrick Henry is entering the twilight of his career in the next couple years and Lamar Jackson will be turning 30. Additionally, crucial contracts for players like Roquan Smith, Nnamdi Madubuike, and Ronnie Stanley are set to expire in 2027, making the situation next season even more tense for Baltimore.

For Las Vegas, this trade could not come at a more perfect time. A new age of football for the franchise is rapidly approaching as they wield the first overall pick going into the 2026 NFL Draft. Whether they decide to begin their rebuild around Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza or trade down for even more draft picks, the franchise couldn’t be in a better spot. Las Vegas can now amass more young talent in the 2026 NFL Draft; while the draft class may not be as strong as previous years, young talent is young talent. Maxx Crosby is a superstar defensive player with a vicious drive and consistent with his deadly spin and rip moves on pass rushes, but Las Vegas have decided to move away from the old to bring in the new which, given the circumstances, is a perfect move for the future of the franchise.

The thought that Baltimore overpaid for Maxx Crosby has nothing to do with the prolific edge rusher himself. Take a look at the highlight below:

One thing is incredibly obvious when watching film on Maxx Crosby: he has an aggressive motor from the moment the ball is snapped to the moment he gets his hands on the quarterback. Maxx Crosby’s vision is impeccable; he quickly gathers information and weaknesses about tackle Cam Fleming’s stance and positioning, making a critical decision to blow past Fleming on the outside and from there, Jarrett Stidham’s fate is sealed. Maxx Crosby becomes lightning when he breaks through a lineman, ensuring the play always finishes with the quarterback on the turf. Maxx Crosby’s motor, drive, and fast critical thinking skills make him not only a threat physically, but a threat in the mental game. The edge rusher is hard to defend and read, having so many options in his toolbox. The film above shows an example of just one of the tools that Maxx Crosby possesses, reading the lineman to quickly cut on the outside. Maxx Crosby also has a deadly spin move and a vicious rip to stampede past most offensive linemen with ease. It is a no-brainer for teams to want a goliath like Maxx Crosby playing defense, even at the steep cost Baltimore paid for him.

So, did the Baltimore Ravens overpay for Maxx Crosby? I’m inclined to say yes. However, the trade is unexpectedly beneficial for Baltimore, even with the amount of draft stock Baltimore has given away. There is no doubt Maxx Crosby has a couple years of elite defensive play still left in him and will be a valuable asset for the Baltimore Ravens’ playoff push next season. Given that, the pressure is on for the Baltimore Ravens. You must piece it together next season and climb the mountain to reach the Super Bowl the franchise has been so desperate for under Lamar Jackson. The right players plus a fresh set of coaching under Jesse Minter gives me the impression that Baltimore is a top AFC threat to look out for next season. On the Las Vegas side, once again, this marks the beginning of their long rebuild. The Raiders have seen few years of success in the modern NFL landscape; the decision to acquire a large roster of young talent through trading away a veteran is great for their current position. Both teams are in opposite positions, one looking for a deep playoff push in the 2026 NFL Season and one looking to land on their feet after a grueling streak of failure. Only time will tell if the price Baltimore paid for the star edge rusher will payoff and if trading away an elite defensive talent will create a brighter future for the Raiders franchise.
